Over 1000 runners entered Sunday’s Eastbourne Hospitality Half Marathon and thousands of spectators lined the route to offer their support and cheer.
On a beautiful, all be it very cold spring morning making for ideal running conditions allowing many of the competitors to enjoy their run despite the strong wind.
At 10.00am in Princes Park Eastbourne United’s Mascot Owl with Heart FM set the runners off after a warm up from the girls at David Lloyd Club Eastbourne and a 10 second count down. As the thousands of feet left the park to pound the 13.1 mile route up towards Beachy Head and back along the promenade right through to Sovereign Harbour and back to Princes Park, spectators cheered them on their way.
The winner Henry Mountcastle, finished in an amazing 1 hour 17 minutes and 56 seconds, and almost 1 and a half minutes ahead of second place Peter Norris.
The winning woman was Yvette Grice from Body Works XTc in 1.26.52. During the main race two children’s races took part in the park which entertained about 30 children. All finished the course and received a medal and helped towards making the atmosphere at the park great fun and entertaining, the winner of the Under 12’s race was Bartek Seta Leyland and the winner of the Over 12’s race was Daniel Carr
Many thanks must go to all the stalwart marshals that braved the freezing cold wind and the volunteers that helped prepare the route and the park for the day.
It is hoped that runners themselves will have collected lots of sponsorship money and once collected this should be sent to Eastbourne Half Marathon, 22 South Street, Eastbourne BN21 4XB.
